The cultural sector lacks national indicators on cultural uses, practices and expectations. In 2023, to compensate for this lack, the Gece research institute revealed the results of its very first barometer of the audiences of museums, monuments and heritage sites.

This survey, conducted among 1,000 French people aged 18 and over, covered various themes:

  • The cultural habits, both physical and online, of the French and their evolution (live shows, museums, etc.);
  • The impact of online practices (virtual tours, online conferences): do they attract new visitors? Do they replace or complement on-site visits? Can we do without it?
  • The information channels favored by the French to discover cultural outings and activities, including the media and social networks used;
  • Changes observed in ticket purchasing since the health crisis; Specific expectations in terms of services and offers when visiting museums and heritage sites;
  • The intention of the French to visit these places in 2023.

Building on the enthusiasm generated by this first edition, we have chosen to repeat the experience in 2024, by delving deeper into the study subjects:

  • Preferred visit methods (support, motivations, etc.);
  • The main expectations of visitors;
  • The average duration of a visit;
  • Preferences in terms of cultural mediation (human, written, digital) and the reasons for these choices;
  • Perception and participation in exhibitions and immersive experiences;
  • Strategies to retain audiences and encourage subscriptions;
  • Interest in flexible pricing.

These new data will be revealed exclusively at the next SITEM, during a conference enriched by the intervention of experts. They will analyze the indicators collected and share their vision for the future of the cultural sector.
